First Dance Song?

I mailed out the deposit for our wedding photographer yesterday and now all I've been thinking about are the hundred things I need to do before the big day I marry my best friend. I know, I'm slightly over reacting (we have a year and a half to figure things out) but sometimes I get in these super girly moods and just want to play wedding planner all day.

I've developed our theme, style and color scheme down to a T...but TJ and I are having such a difficult time deciding on our first dance song! I spent twenty years of my life dancing, choreographing, studying and picking apart music that you can just imagine how important our first dance song is. All of the songs I have danced and choreographed to in the past focused on emulating a feeling to the audience, set a mood, and told a story - I want our guests to be moved by whatever song we choose on an emotional level, feel the love we have for each other and enlighten everyones senses, and most importantly, I want everyone to watch us dance to a song that reflects our story, not just something popular from the radio a year from now.

How did you decide on your first dance song? Was it "your song", did it tell "your story", or what?

We have a list, but they all have something wrong with them - perfect lyrics but sounds like a funeral song, to slow, too fast, too much about me. Here are our top contenders. I have bolded everything that screams "US" and tells our story. I wish I could just mush them all together :)

Steady As We Go by DMB

I walk half way around the world,
Just to sit down by your side.
And I would do most anything girl,
To be the apple of your eye.
Troubles they may come and go,
But good times they are the gold.
And if this road gets rocky girl,
Just steady as we go.
Any place you wanna go,
Know I'll be next to you.
If it's treasure baby you're looking for,
I'll search the whole world through.
Know troubles they may come and go,
But good times they're the gold.
So if the road gets rocky girl,
Just steady as we go.
When the storm comes,
You shelter me.
And I don't say a word,
And you know exactly what I mean.
In the darkest times,
You shine on me.
You set me free.
And keep me steady as we go.
So if your heart rings dry my love,
I will fill your cup.
And if your load gets heavy girl,
I will lift you up.
Troubles they may come and go,
But good times be the gold.
So if this road gets rocky girl,
Just steady as we go.

Such Great Heights Cover by Juliana

I am thinking it's a sign
That the freckles in our eyes
Are mirror images and when we kiss
They're perfectly aligned
 And I have to speculate
That God himself did make us
Into corresponding shapes
Like puzzle pieces from the clay
And true it may seem like a stretch
But it's thoughts like this that catch
My troubled head when you're away
When I am missing you to death
When you are out there on the road
For several weeks of shows
And when you scan the radio
I hope this song will guide you home

They will see us waving from such great heights
Come down now, they'll say
But everything looks perfect from far away
Come down now but we'll stay
I've tried my best to leave
This all on your machine
But the persistent beat
It sounded thin upon listening
And that frankly will not fly
You'll hear the shrillest highs
And lowest lows with the windows down
When this is guiding you home
They will see us waving from such great heights
Come down now, they'll say
But everything looks perfect from far away
Come down now but we'll stay

Lucky by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat

Do you hear me? I'm talking to you
Across the water across the deep blue ocean
Under the open sky, oh my, baby I'm trying
Boy I hear you in my dreams
I feel your whisper across the sea
I keep you with me in my heart
You make it easier when life gets hard
I'm lucky I'm in love with my best friend
Lucky to have been where I have been
Lucky to be coming home again
Ooh ooh ooh

They don't know how long it takes
Waiting for a love like this
Every time we say goodbye
I wish we had one more kiss
I'll wait for you I promise you, I will
I'm lucky I'm in love with my best friend
Lucky to have been where I have been
Lucky to be coming home again
Lucky we're in love in every way
Lucky to have stayed where we have stayed
Lucky to be coming home someday
And so I'm sailing through the sea
To an island where we'll meet
You'll hear the music fill the air
I'll put a flower in your hair
 Though the breezes through trees
Move so pretty you're all I see
As the world keeps spinning 'round
You hold me right here, right now
I'm lucky I'm in love with my best friend
Lucky to have been where I have been
Lucky to be coming home again
I'm lucky we're in love in every way
Lucky to have stayed where we have stayed
Lucky to be coming home someday

Little Moments by Brad Paisley

Well I'll never forget the first time that I heard
That pretty mouth say that dirty word
And I can't even remember now what she backed my truck into
But she covered her mouth and her face got red

And she just looked so darn cute
That I couldn't even act like I was mad
Yeah I live for little moments like that
Well that's just like last year on my birthday
She lost all track of time and burnt the cake
And every smoke detector in the house was goin' off

And she was just about to cry until I took her in my arms
And I tried not to let her see me laugh
Yeah I live for little moments like that
I know she's not perfect but she tries so hard for me
And I thank god that she isn't 'cause how boring would that be
It's the little imperfections it's the sudden change in plans
When she misreads the directions and we're lost but holdin' hands
Yeah I live for little moments like that
When she's layin' on my shoulder on the sofa in the dark
And about the time she falls asleep so does my right arm
And I want so bad to move it 'cause it's tinglin' and it's numb
But she looks so much like an angel that I don't wanna wake her up
Yeah I live for little moments
When she steals my heart again and doesn't even know it
Yeah I live for little moments like that

  1. Congrats W2B!!I can understand that you are excited! We never had a "first dance song" since we got married at the beach in Aruba...but we had Ave Maria played when I went down the Beach aisle and that will forever be our song!!!

  2. I love the Brad Paisley song you have on your list. I also love Crazy Love (the Jackson Browne and Marc Cohn version) and of course the classic Amazed by LoneStar is a great song.
Whichever you both pick I am sure will tell your story perfectly. Good luck with your choice.

  3. Mrs. K - oh a beach wedding sounds beautiful, I am jealous! I love Ave Maria, it gives me the chills every time I hear it :)

  4. I love that song as well, I am just concerned it's too much about the female....but everything I highlighted HAS happened to us so it does seem very fitting :) Thank you!

  5. These are such great songs!! I absolutely love those choices. The Cobie and Jason song was actually one of our runner ups. We also were looking into DMB's You and Me song. But we ended up choosing Train's Hey Soul Sister...we aren't the best at dancing and it kind of let us bounce around:)

  6. I think that no matter what you choose its gonna be forever special to you:)

  7. Marian - Thanks for the comment :) I tried to find your blog on your profile but saw a bunch of links - where can I follow your blog back?

    Mrs. K - I agree, thank you!

  8. There are sooo many good choices out there! Love all of your top contenders... top 3 on our list were: Rascal Flatts- I Melt ("our song" that has special meaning to us from way back when) Michael Buble- Everything- love love love Michael... and especially that song. BUT We ended up going with (try not to laugh) Nick Lachey- This I Swear. I was (and still am) obsessed with Jessica and him. I still watch Newlyweds and pretend they are still together (yes I know, I have a problem... haha). One could argue that it's not the best wedding song choice since they aren't even together anymore... lol... but all of the words are just p.e.r.f.e.c.t. and I love them! I agree with everyone else, no matter what you pick it will be great and will forever be a special song for you two! There are so many great songs out there, you can't go wrong :)

  9. hi there! found you on 20SB. i got married in Sept. and am loving your wedding planning posts, just breathe! it will go so fast, savor every moment!

  10. Good choices! My friend Kristen is planning her wedding (it's in May) and she spends hours each day in search of the perfect 'first dance' song. She keeps coming back to Lucky too, and I can't blame her, it's adorable. There are so many options out there ... I think that when you hear THE ONE, you'll know. And any song you choose will be special - and it'll have a whole new meaning once you dance to it at your wedding. Keep us posted on what you choose!

  12. CMD - I love Rascall Flats as well, we are big Country and 80s fans over here. I am on the search now for an acapella Bon Jovi something or another. Who knew choosing a song would be one of the hardest things to decide on!

Maggie - Yes, this is the secret that everyone tells me! We just got engaged in August and then moved to Germany 3 days later, so we decided on a two year engagement period because otherwise I think I would be a little looney planning the entire thing from another country. I am following your blog now, I love your writing!

HW - I agree...I keep feeling that "the one" is Little Moments but I want a song that reflects the both of us, not just how goofy I am ;)...(or admits to me backing his Hummer into something) haha!!

  13. I like your choices. I never had a dance at my wedding. We had a very casual wedding without a DJ.

  14. Steady As We Go was our first dance song. Beautiful song and we are huge Dave fans. Congratulations.

  15. It's a hard choice! I researched tons of songs for our wedding but it was easy to decide on our first song. It was Better by Boyzone. It was simple and told our story because we make each other "better"
