Hannover, Germany: Then & Now

Yesterday TJ and I went to check out the Hannover City Hall -- I know, I know, this is probably a site we should have seen when we first got here six months ago...but as they say, "time flies when you're having fun"....or something like that...

With only a few short weeks left here in Germany, we're on a mission to see as much as we can before we head back to Massachusetts for the offseason. I hope that I'll have some interesting photos to share with all of you each week before we go.

(PS - all of these photos will enlarge when you click on them!)

The City Hall, or "Rathaus" is such a beautiful architectural masterpiece - it looks more like a palace rather than a City Hall, doesn't it? The building is very elegant with powerful statues, a domed ceiling, and gorgeous marble staircases, balconies and columns.

Hannover was basically completely annihilated except for the Rathaus by American bomb raids during World War II (err...so maybe this is why our neighbors constantly yell mean things at us in Deutsch?) There are four detailed and accurate models of the city on display in the Rathaus that show the development, growth, destruction, and rebuild of the entire city.

After WWII
The entire city of Hannover was destroyed and had to be rebuilt
This is why it's now referred to as "Modern Germany"
'Hannover Today'

  1. Wow! Those pictures are great, how beautiful is the Rathaus there. Thanks for sharing :)

  2. Wow! What a beautiful building! It does look like a palace! Puts every city hall I've ever seen to shame for sure!!!

  3. Aah...a little piece of home! Love the pics! I bet it was very interesting!

  4. Pretty! I loved Germany so much when I was there. I was in Dresden for a few days and the entire destruction/rebuilding of Hannover reminds me of Dresden...half of it is really new and half is really old, it's so cool to see the different styles side by side. I want to go back!!

  5. So neat! I've never left the US (not by choice!) so I'm living vicariously through your pics. :)

  6. Lovely photos! Hannover looks amazing! It's really tragic about the bombings during WW2...especially in Dresden! :( It's amazing how fast they were able to rebuild these cities though!

  7. Absolutely beautiful... thanks for sharing!!! When I visited Hiroshima in Japan, they had a similar model and in learning more about the whole dropping of the bomb thing, it made me amazed at how friendly and open they are towards Americans :)

  8. I love site seeing :) Looks like you had a great time :)

  9. The City Hall photos are stunning! Looks like a postcard. I have always wanted to visit there...hopefully once I'm a little closer, it will be easy to do so.

  10. beautiful. If you come our way let me know. We are over by Mainz. We are trying to get to Klon Soon.
