The First Step

Do you want to know how many steps it is from the door of my apartment to the door of our community fitness center? Of course you do.

Sixty seven. 67. Siebenundsechzig. Sesenta y siete.

And for those of you who are wondering - yes, I counted each step....and those last two words above are how you say sixty seven in Deutsch and Spanish. Ya know, in case you're ever on 'Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?' or something. You're welcome.

As I was counting the steps out the other day it occurred to me that I am no longer allowed to concoct a single excuse as to why I can't walk those 67 steps into the 24 hour fitness center at least four to five times a week. And then I realized how lucky I am to have the legs to walk to the gym that's so accessible to me. It was actually sort of humbling.

So how does this epiphany of mine apply to you? Because at the end of the day, it doesn't matter how you do it, as long as you take The First Step. I know that a lot of people don't have the easy accessibility of an exercise facility within walking distance, but there are plenty of other steps you can take to start living a healthier and more active lifestyle. 

And now, you can check back in every Monday for a new tip or trick that will provide you with some motivation to start your week on the right track of making more conscious decisions in regards to your health, fitness, and overall well being.

First up to get this party started: Portion Control.

I myself am definitely guilty of exceeding the suggested serving size of an ice cream scoop of pasta, a computer mouse sized potato and a dental floss sized piece of chocolate! This handy and easy to remember chart will certainly be in the back of my mind this week as I prepare and serve meals.

  1. I am in the same boat with you of having a 24 hour fitness center in walking distance. I also have a gym membership at a gym only 1.2 miles from my apartment. I have been getting better about going... but I swear, the hardest part is getting my butt off the couch & going!!

    And what you said about having the ability to walk is humbling... I totally agree! Go girl :)

  3. I am excited about this! I am sure I will learn a lot more, and hopefully get my lazy butt off the couch again very soon as well!

  4. Crap KY... no wonder I can't lose weight! An ice cream scoop of pasta? Does that include Gluten Free pasta too??? Dang... What about those of us who don't eat meat? Can I have two ice cream scoops of pasta?
